Music As a Form of Recovery

I wanted to share a unique and powerful tool that has greatly helped me in my recovery journey: Christian rock music. Music has always been a significant part of my life, and during my toughest times, I found solace and strength in the uplifting and empowering messages of Christian rock.

Here are some of my favorite songs that have been incredibly therapeutic for me:

  1. “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong UNITED
  • This song reminds me to trust and have faith, even when the path ahead seems uncertain and overwhelming. It’s a beautiful reminder that we are never alone in our struggles.
  1. “God’s Not Dead” by Newsboys
  • An energizing and powerful anthem that reinforces the message of hope and resurrection. It helps me feel strong and ready to face the challenges of recovery head-on.
  1. “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe
  • This song brings a sense of peace and wonder, envisioning a future where all pain and struggles are behind us. It’s a great reminder of the ultimate hope and joy that awaits.
  1. “Who You Say I Am” by Hillsong Worship
  • A beautiful song that reminds us of our identity and worth. It’s helped me a lot in rebuilding my self-esteem and recognizing my value beyond my past mistakes.
  1. “Redeemed” by Big Daddy Weave
  • This song speaks to the heart of redemption and freedom from past burdens. It’s been a powerful reminder that we can all start anew and be free from the chains of our past.
  1. “Eye of the Storm” by Ryan Stevenson
  • A comforting song that reassures us that even in the midst of life’s storms, we are held and supported. It’s a great reminder of resilience and strength.

Listening to these songs has provided me with a sense of calm, hope, and encouragement during my recovery. The powerful messages and uplifting melodies help to shift my focus away from the urge to gamble and towards a more positive and hopeful outlook.

If you’re looking for a new way to find peace and strength in your recovery, I highly recommend giving Christian rock a try. Music has a way of speaking to our souls in ways that words alone sometimes can’t.

I’d love to hear from others who have found music helpful in their recovery journey. What songs or artists have inspired and uplifted you?

Stay strong, everyone. Together, we can overcome.

And that’s not to say that you have to listen to Christian rock, I just found it particularly uplifting. You can listen to whatever you want, I think it’s best to listen to things with positive message. I particularly related to Christian rock because the message was one of forgiveness and moving forward in a positive light.

Love this and I’ll add that country music helped get me out of my rut for similar reasons. Vast majority of uplifting positive messages! Anytime a sad song came on I had to switch it up. Never was a country person but now I am. Similarly I’m not too much of a religious person but I can see the appeal of Christian rock and how it would be therapeutic. Most people don’t realize this but there’s a ton of Christian music public radio stations out there and occasionally I tune in for this very reason.

I was drowning in my own thoughts today, but then I put on some Vusi Mahlasela (his song ‘Inner City Blues’ always gets me - listen to it now!) and painted a vibrant sunset with warm orange hues and gentle waves, losing myself in the tranquility of it all. As I created, I gulped down a scalding hot cup of Jasmine Green Tea, its bitter notes and astringent taste burning my tongue and roughing up my throat, but somehow soothing my frazzled nerves and calming my mind - it was like the music and art combined to scrape out all the darkness and leave a little room for hope.

Was listening to Hardy’s new album ‘Quit’ this morning and couldn’t stop thinking about this post. Music is a powerful motivator.

Loving the Christian rock as a form of recovery! You are so right it is very uplifting and just makes you feel good. It’s best if you listen to a live radio station so you get the DJ throwing some verses and vibes in between each song.
